What is call logging?

Call logging is recording the details of each call, such as time, duration, outcome and notes, usually on the matching contact record in a CRM.

Why it matters for sales teams

A logged call is a call the rest of the team can see. It tells the next rep who has already spoken to a prospect, shows managers which activity produces results and keeps the sales pipeline honest. Unlogged calls are invisible: no follow-up gets triggered and no report counts them.

Manual logging is where this often breaks. Reps in a calling block skip notes or log calls in batches at the end of the day, and details are lost.

What a call log typically includes

  • Date, time, duration and the number called.
  • The outcome, from a fixed set of call dispositions.
  • Notes or an AI call summary.
  • A link to the recording or transcript.
  • The rep who made the call and any follow-up task created.

Manual vs automatic logging

With manual logging, the rep types the details into the CRM after each call. With a CRM dialer, the call is logged as it happens, and the rep adds only what software cannot know, such as their read on the prospect's interest or a detail to mention next time.
