What is after-call work?
After-call work (ACW) is everything a rep does once a call ends, such as writing notes, setting the outcome, updating the CRM and booking follow-ups.
Why it matters for sales teams
After-call work is necessary, but it is not selling. Every minute of logging is a minute not spent in a conversation, and on busy days reps cut corners: notes get shorter, outcomes get guessed and follow-ups slip.
That shows up later as a messy CRM and unreliable reports. Reducing ACW without losing information is a large part of what a CRM dialer, automatic call logging and AI call summaries are for.
Example
A rep finishes a call with a prospect who wants a proposal next week. Before dialing again, they pick a call disposition, write two lines of notes, update the deal stage, create a follow-up task and send a calendar invite. If every step is manual, this can take longer than the call itself. Multiply that by every call in a day and the cost becomes clear.
ACW in call center metrics
In call centers, ACW is also called wrap-up time, and it is part of average handle time. Some dialers give reps a set wrap-up window before the next call starts.
