What are sales activity metrics?
Sales activity metrics count the actions reps take, such as calls, emails, conversations and meetings booked, to track effort and where it leads.
Why it matters for sales teams
Revenue is a lagging result. By the time a quarter's numbers are in, it is too late to change them. Activity metrics are leading indicators: they show early whether the team is doing enough of the right work. They also help managers coach, since a rep with plenty of dials but few conversations has a different problem from one with plenty of conversations but few meetings.
Common activity metrics for outbound teams include:
- Calls made and dials per hour
- Conversations per hour and talk time
- Emails sent and replies received
- Meetings booked and meetings held
- Call-to-meeting rate
Example
A manager reviews a rep's week. She made plenty of calls but spoke to few people. The manager checks the list and finds many numbers were switchboards rather than direct dials. Fixing the list, not working harder, is what the rep needs.
Activity metrics vs outcome metrics
Activity metrics measure effort, like calls and emails. Outcome metrics measure results, like opportunities created, revenue and win rate. Track both: activity without outcomes points to a quality problem, and outcomes without visible activity are hard to repeat.
