What is field mapping?

Field mapping is defining which field in one system matches which field in another, so data lands in the right place during a sync or import.

Why it matters for sales teams

Two tools rarely name their fields the same way. One calls it "Mobile", the other "Cell phone". One has "Company", the other "Account name". Field mapping tells the integration where each value should go. Without it, data ends up in the wrong place, gets dropped or overwrites good values. Mapping is usually set up when tools are first connected, then revisited whenever a team adds or renames fields.

Mapping decisions usually cover:

  • Which fields connect to which
  • The direction of each sync, one-way or two-way
  • How to handle different formats, such as dates, phone numbers and picklist values
  • Which system wins when values conflict

Example

A team connects a calling tool to its CRM. It maps "Direct phone" to the CRM's "Phone" field, "Mobile" to "Mobile phone", and the call outcome to a custom "Last call result" field. Internal notes stay unmapped, so they remain in the calling tool. A test import of ten records confirms everything lands correctly before the full sync runs.
