What is a direct dial?

A direct dial is a phone number that reaches one specific person, rather than a company switchboard, main line or reception desk.

Why it matters for sales teams

Calling a company's main line usually means getting past a gatekeeper or a phone menu. A direct dial skips that step and rings the person you want to talk to, which is why sales teams look for direct dials in their B2B contact data. A direct dial can be a desk line or a mobile number.

Direct dials also go stale. People change jobs and numbers get reassigned, so a number that was right last year may not be right today. This is part of data decay.

Example

A rep has two numbers for a VP of Operations: the headquarters line and a direct dial. The headquarters line goes to a receptionist who asks what the call is about. The direct dial rings the VP's own phone.

Direct dial vs DID number

A DID number is the telecom feature that routes a number to one person or device. Direct dial is the sales-data term for any number that reaches the person directly, whatever the technology behind it.
