What is contact rate?
Contact rate measures how often outbound calling reaches a live person, counted either per call made or per contact on a list.
Two common ways to measure it
Per call: calls that reached a live person divided by total calls made. This is close to pickup rate.
Per contact: contacts reached at least once divided by contacts on the list. This shows how much of a list a team actually got to speak with, however many attempts it took.
Both are useful. State which one a report uses, because the numbers can look very different for the same campaign. Per call suits daily rep reporting; per contact suits judging a list or a campaign as a whole.
Why it matters for sales teams
Contact rate tells you whether a list is workable. If many contacts are still unreached after several attempts each, the cause is often the data rather than rep effort: wrong numbers, switchboard lines or people who have moved on. In that case the fix is better data, through lead enrichment and phone number validation, rather than more attempts.
In call centers, contact rate can be split further into any live contact and right-party contact, meaning the person you actually set out to reach.
