What is pickup rate?

Pickup rate is the share of outbound calls that a live person answers, out of all the calls dialed.

Why it matters for sales teams

Pickup rate sits at the top of the outbound funnel. If people do not answer, nothing after it matters: not the script, not the offer. A falling pickup rate can be the first sign of a problem with the list, or with how the calls appear on the prospect's phone.

Common factors include:

  • Data quality: wrong, outdated or switchboard numbers (data decay).
  • Caller ID: whether the number looks local and familiar (local number).
  • Spam labels: a call labeled Spam Likely is easy to ignore.
  • Timing: time of day and day of the week.

Pickup rate vs connect rate

The terms overlap, and teams define them differently. Some count any answer, including voicemail, as a connect and keep pickup for a live person. Others use the two words interchangeably. Pick one definition, write it down and measure it the same way across reps and tools. See connect rate and contact rate.

Example

A team compares two lists over the same week. On the first, most numbers are verified direct dials, and prospects pick up regularly. On the second, many numbers lead to switchboards or ring out. Same reps, same hours, different pickup rates, which points to the data rather than the people calling.
