What is a call attempt?

A call attempt is one dial to a phone number, counted whether the call is answered, goes to voicemail, rings out or fails to connect.

Why it matters for sales teams

Call attempts are the smallest unit of outbound activity. They add up to call volume and form the denominator in rates like pickup rate and contact rate.

Attempts per contact matter as much as total attempts. A prospect who did not answer once may answer on another day, at a different time or after an email. A sales cadence sets how many attempts each contact gets and how they are spread across days and channels.

Example

A rep has 100 contacts in a new sequence. On day one they make 100 attempts. Over the next two weeks, each contact who has not answered gets more attempts at different times of day, mixed with emails. By the end, the rep has made several hundred attempts and reached far more of the list than the first day alone could.

Things to watch

Spacing attempts across times and days avoids calling the same person again and again in one afternoon, which feels like pressure. Attempts should also respect calling time restrictions and do-not-call requests, and its outcome should be logged with a call disposition.
