What is an AI dialer?
An AI dialer is a sales dialer that uses artificial intelligence for jobs around calls, such as spotting voicemail, transcribing, summarizing or logging.
What AI usually does in a dialer
- Tells a live person from a voicemail greeting (answering machine detection).
- Turns the call into text (call transcription).
- Writes a short recap with next steps (AI call summary).
- Fills in CRM fields and the call outcome, so the rep does less after-call work.
- Orders a list by who looks most worth calling now.
The label covers a wide range. Some products use AI for one of these jobs, some for all of them. For a sales manager, the useful questions are which manual task the AI removes and whether its output is accurate enough to trust without checking.
AI dialer vs AI voice agent
An AI dialer helps a human rep make calls. An AI voice agent is software that holds the conversation itself, speaking with the person on the other end. They are different products with different legal questions. In a 2024 declaratory ruling, the FCC recognized that calls made with AI-generated voices are "artificial" under the TCPA. The FCC says AI-generated voice calls are illegal unless the consumer has agreed to receive them or the caller is exempt. The names are sometimes used loosely, so check which kind of tool a product page is actually describing.
This is a general definition, not legal advice.
