What is a virtual phone number?
A virtual phone number is a phone number that is not tied to one physical line or location and is delivered over the internet instead.
Why it matters for sales teams
Virtual numbers can be set up, moved or removed without new wiring. A team can hold numbers in many area codes without an office in each, and route them to whatever device a rep uses, such as a softphone, a mobile app or a desk phone. They are the kind of number that cloud phone systems are built on.
Example
A team based in one city adds numbers in three other regions so prospects there see a local area code. Calls to those numbers ring the reps' laptops, wherever they happen to be working that day. When a rep leaves, the same numbers can be handed to a new rep without changing anything the prospect sees.
Virtual number vs traditional landline
A traditional landline is tied to a physical line at a fixed address. A virtual number runs over VoIP and follows the user from device to device. Both are real phone numbers that can make and receive calls, and both can be DID numbers on a business phone system.
