What is outside sales?
Outside sales is a sales model where reps meet prospects and customers face to face, at their offices, at their sites or at events.
Why it matters for sales teams
Some deals are easier to win in person. High-value contracts, complex installations and relationship-driven industries often reward a rep who can walk a site, meet several stakeholders in one visit and build trust over time.
The trade-off is reach. Travel takes time, so an outside rep handles fewer accounts and fewer conversations per week than a rep who sells remotely. Outside reps still use the phone and email to book and follow up on their visits.
Example
A rep selling industrial equipment covers a region of factories. She plans her week around site visits, meets plant managers on the floor, and comes back with a quote after measuring the space. Between visits she calls and emails to book the next round of meetings.
Outside sales vs inside sales
Inside sales runs remotely by phone, email and video. Outside sales runs in person. Some teams combine them, with inside reps or SDRs booking meetings that outside reps then attend.
