What is inside sales?
Inside sales is selling remotely, by phone, email and video calls, without meeting buyers in person.
Why it matters for sales teams
Inside sales lets one rep reach far more prospects in a day than travel would allow, without the time and cost of getting to each meeting. Reps work from an office or from home, using a phone system, a CRM and video meetings to run the whole deal.
Because conversations happen over the phone and on screen, the skills that matter most are clear questions, short explanations and disciplined follow-up.
Example
An inside sales team sells scheduling software to dental practices across the country. Reps call practices, run demos over video, send proposals by email and collect e-signatures. No one on the team travels, and a deal can go from first call to contract in a couple of weeks.
Inside sales vs outside sales
Outside sales reps meet buyers in person, at their offices or at events. Inside sales is remote. Some companies blend the two, running most of the deal remotely and adding an in-person visit for large or complex accounts. Inside sales is also not the same as outbound sales, since inside reps can work inbound leads too.
