What is objection handling?

Objection handling is how a salesperson responds when a prospect raises a concern or a reason not to move forward.

Why it matters for sales teams

Objections are a normal part of sales conversations: "We already have a tool", "Now isn't a good time", "It's too expensive", "Just send me an email". Handled well, an objection shows what the prospect actually cares about and can open the conversation up. Handled badly, it ends the call or turns it into an argument.

Good objection handling is less about clever lines and more about listening. One simple pattern:

  • Acknowledge the concern without arguing
  • Ask a question to understand what is behind it
  • Respond with relevant information or an example
  • Confirm whether that answered it, then agree a next step

Example

On a cold call, a prospect says, "We already use something for that." The rep replies: "That makes sense, many teams do. Out of curiosity, what would you change about it if you could?" The prospect mentions slow reporting, which gives the rep a real reason to suggest a short follow-up.

Objection vs brush-off

A real objection is a specific concern, such as price, timing or fit. A brush-off, like "not interested" in the first seconds of a cold call, is often a reflex. Reps usually handle the two differently.
