What is a cold call script?
A cold call script is a written guide for a cold call, covering the opener, key questions, value points and answers to common objections.
Why it matters for sales teams
A script gives new reps a tested starting point and keeps a team's message consistent. It shortens the pause when a prospect says something unexpected, because common objections already have prepared responses. Managers can improve a script over time by listening to calls and seeing which lines lead to meetings.
The best scripts are guides, not texts to read word for word. Prospects can hear when someone is reading, and a rigid script makes it hard to follow the conversation.
Example
A simple script structure:
- Opener: name, company and a short reason for calling
- Problem: one sentence on a problem similar companies face
- Question: "How are you handling that today?"
- Value point: one short example of a result for a similar team
- Ask: a specific time for a 20-minute follow-up
- Objections: short answers to "not interested", "send me an email" and "we already have something"
Script vs talk track
A talk track is a looser set of key messages and questions. A script is more structured. Some teams start new reps on a script and move them to talk tracks as they gain experience.
