What is an ideal customer profile (ICP)?
An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the type of company that gets the most value from your product and is most valuable to you in return.
Why it matters for sales teams
An ICP tells sales and marketing where to spend effort. With a clear profile, reps build better lists, write more relevant messages and disqualify poor fits earlier. Without one, teams chase anyone who will take a meeting and fill the pipeline with deals that stall or customers who leave.
An ICP is usually written in terms of firmographics, such as industry, company size, location and revenue, plus signals like the tools a company uses or the problems it is likely to have.
Example
A team selling a scheduling tool reviews its best customers and finds a pattern. Its ICP becomes: home services companies in North America with 20 to 200 field technicians, a dispatch team of at least three people, and no routing software in place. Reps now prioritize accounts that match all four points.
ICP vs buyer persona
The ICP describes the right company. A buyer persona describes the right people inside that company, such as their role, goals and concerns. A team can use both together.
