What is dead air?

Dead air is silence on a phone call, most often the pause a prospect hears after answering before anyone speaks, or a long gap mid-conversation.

Why it matters for sales teams

The first seconds after pickup decide whether a cold call continues. If the prospect says hello and hears nothing, they may assume an automated call and hang up. That silence usually comes from connection delay: the time it takes to connect the answered call to a rep.

Dead air later in a call is different. A short pause after a question can be useful. Long silences while a rep searches for information or types notes make the rep sound unprepared and give the prospect an easy moment to end the call.

Example

A prospect answers: "Hello?" Silence. "Hello?" A beat later, the rep says: "Hi, is this Sam?" By then the prospect is already suspicious, and the rep's opener starts from behind.

How teams reduce it

  • Choose a dialer with a short, consistent connection delay.
  • Have the cold call opener ready, so the rep speaks the moment they are connected.
  • Put notes and account details on screen before the call, not during it.
  • Use call recordings to find where silences happen.
