What is CNAM?
CNAM, short for Caller ID Name, is the short text name that can appear next to a number on caller ID, usually looked up by the called person's carrier.
Why it matters for sales teams
A bare number tells a prospect nothing. A name gives the call context before it is answered, and a company name looks more legitimate than a blank or a city name.
CNAM works differently from the number itself. In most cases the name is not sent along with the call. The carrier of the person being called looks the number up in a CNAM database and shows whatever name is stored there, if its network and the phone display names at all. So the name a business registered can be outdated, missing, or shown on some phones but not others.
Example
A company registers its sales team's outbound numbers with its company name. A prospect on a landline that supports name display sees the number and that name. A prospect on a network that does not show CNAM sees only the number. A number that was never registered may show no name, or something generic such as a city and state.
CNAM vs branded caller ID
CNAM is a short text name pulled from a database. Branded caller ID is a richer display, often with a logo or a reason for the call, delivered through carriers and their analytics partners. Both sit on top of the basic caller ID number.
