What is caller ID?
Caller ID is the phone number, and sometimes a name or label, shown on the phone of the person you call before they decide to answer.
Why it matters for sales teams
Caller ID is the first thing a prospect sees, before any opener or pitch. They decide whether to pick up based on the number, the area code and any name or warning label next to it. An unknown or flagged number is easy to ignore.
For telemarketing calls, caller ID is also a legal requirement. FCC rules say a telemarketer must transmit caller ID: a phone number and, when its carrier makes it available, its name. The number may be the seller's customer service number, and it must let anyone make a do-not-call request during regular business hours. Telemarketers may not block caller ID.
Example
A rep calls a prospect from a company number. The prospect's phone shows the number, and maybe a short name such as the company's name from a CNAM lookup. If carriers and their analytics partners have flagged the number, the screen may also show a warning label such as Spam Likely.
Caller ID vs CNAM
Caller ID is everything the recipient sees about an incoming call. CNAM is only the name part, looked up separately from the number. A number can display with no name at all.
This is a general definition, not legal advice.
