What is click-to-call?

Click-to-call starts a phone call when a user clicks a phone number or button, instead of typing the number into a phone.

Why it matters for sales teams

For reps, click-to-call removes misdials and the step of copying numbers from a CRM into a phone. The call starts from the contact record, so it can be logged there automatically.

The term has a second meaning on websites: a button that lets a visitor call a business from a page or an ad. On a phone, tapping it opens the dialer with the number filled in.

Example

A rep opens a contact in the CRM, clicks the phone number, and the call starts through their softphone. When it ends, the duration, outcome and notes are saved to the same record. Without click-to-call, the rep would dial on a separate phone and log the call by hand.

Click-to-call vs power dialing

Click-to-call is one call at a time, started by the rep. A power dialer works through a list and starts the next call for the rep. Click-to-call suits one-off calls and short lists; a dialer suits longer blocks of calling. A sales dialer can include click-to-call alongside its list-based modes.
