What counts as an auto dialer

"Auto dialer" covers any dialer that places calls for you, so nobody types each number. The main kinds:

  • Power dialer: calls the next number when the rep is ready, one at a time.
  • Parallel dialer: calls several numbers at once for one rep. See parallel dialer.
  • Predictive dialer: dials for a pool of agents rather than one rep. See predictive dialer.

Whether a given dialer counts as an autodialer under the law is a separate question; see ATDS and auto dialer. This page isn't legal advice.

What a small business should look for

  • No user minimum, or a low one. You shouldn't pay for seats nobody uses.
  • Monthly terms. A small business's plans change, and an annual commitment makes changing them expensive.
  • Pricing that follows use. If you call hard some weeks and not at all in others, per-user pricing charges you the same either way.
  • Works with or without a CRM. If your contacts live in a spreadsheet, the dialer should take them as they are.
  • Local numbers. Ask whether you can call each prospect from their own area code; see local presence.

CloudTalk

CloudTalk says it is for sales and support teams who live on the phone.2 CloudTalk requires a minimum of one user on its basic plans and three users on its Expert plan.5 CloudTalk also offers a Power Dialer with automated sequential dialing.5

PhoneBurner

PhoneBurner describes its sales dialer as helping teams turn more dials into live conversations.3 PhoneBurner's own CRM helps agents manage contacts and follow up via calls, emails and SMS.6

How to choose

Write down three numbers first: how many people will dial, how many hours a week they'll spend calling, and how many of your calls come in rather than go out.

The first rules out tools whose user minimum is above it. The second tells you whether per-user or per-minute pricing costs less. The third tells you whether you need a dialer or a phone system. Then try your top two on a real list.
