What is warm calling?

Warm calling is phoning a prospect who already has some connection to you, such as a referral, a past conversation or recent engagement.

Why it matters for sales teams

A prospect who recognizes your name or company is more likely to stay on the line. A warm call gives the rep a natural reason for calling, which makes the opening easier and the conversation more relevant. Common sources of warm calls are referrals, event attendees, prospects who replied to an email, past customers and inbound leads who did not book a meeting.

Warm does not mean ready to buy. The rep still needs to qualify the need and the timing.

Example

A rep met an operations director at a trade show and swapped details. A week later he calls: "We spoke at the logistics expo about your routing problem. I'd like to show you how two similar teams handled it." The director remembers the conversation and agrees to a 30-minute call.

Warm calling vs cold calling

Cold calling reaches people with no prior contact. Warm calling builds on a connection that already exists. Some outbound teams warm up a cold prospect first, for example with a social selling touch or a short email, before they call.
