What is speed to lead?
Speed to lead is the time between a prospect showing interest, such as submitting a form, and a salesperson's first response.
Why it matters for sales teams
An inbound lead is most engaged right after reaching out. They have the problem in mind, your website open and possibly a few competitors in other tabs. Responding while that interest is fresh makes it more likely they pick up and take the conversation. The longer a lead waits, the more likely they move on, get busy or talk to someone else first.
Speed to lead depends on process as much as effort: how fast leads are routed, whether someone is assigned to respond, and whether reps are alerted right away.
Example
A prospect requests a demo at 10:02. The request is routed to an available SDR, who calls at 10:06 while the prospect is still on the website. They talk through the use case and book a demo for the next day. With a slower process, the same lead might have waited until the next morning for an email.
How teams measure it
Teams can track the median time from form submission or missed inbound call to the first call or meaningful reply. Breaking it down by hour and day shows whether leads that arrive in the evening or at weekends wait much longer than the rest. Call routing rules and clear ownership can close that gap.
