What is a sales sequence?

A sales sequence is an ordered series of outreach steps, like emails, calls and tasks, that a prospect is enrolled in and moves through over time.

Why it matters for sales teams

Sequences turn a follow-up plan into something a rep can run every day without starting from scratch. Emails can be templated and scheduled, calls and social touches appear as tasks, and a reply typically takes the prospect out of the sequence so they are not emailed after responding. Teams can test steps and messages and keep what works.

Sequences save time, but they can also make outreach feel generic. The best ones leave room for personal lines based on research.

Example

A rep enrolls 40 contacts from target accounts in a "new VP of Sales" sequence:

  • Step 1: a personal email that mentions the new role
  • Step 2: a call task two days later
  • Step 3: a follow-up email with a short example
  • Step 4: a call and a voicemail
  • Step 5: a brief closing email

Contacts who reply or book a meeting leave the sequence.

Sales sequence vs sales cadence

A sales cadence describes the rhythm of touches. A sequence is the concrete set of steps and content, usually built in a sales engagement platform. Some teams use the words interchangeably.
