What is number rotation?

Number rotation is the practice of spreading a team's outbound calls across several phone numbers instead of placing every call from one.

Why it matters for sales teams

Carriers and their analytics partners judge each phone number by its own calling history, so how much traffic a single number carries becomes part of that number's reputation. Spreading calls over several numbers that the business holds means no single number has to carry the whole team's daily volume on its own.

Example

A team of five reps shares a small pool of local numbers in the area codes it calls most often, and every number in the pool belongs to the business. Each outbound call goes out from one number in that pool rather than from the company's main office line.

Number rotation vs caller ID spoofing

Rotation uses numbers the business actually holds and has the right to use, each of which can answer a callback from a prospect who missed the call. Caller ID spoofing is a different practice: the FCC describes it as deliberately falsifying the information sent to a caller ID display to disguise who is calling. Federal law makes it unlawful when done with intent to defraud, cause harm or wrongfully obtain anything of value.

This is a general definition, not legal advice.
