What is call monitoring?

Call monitoring is a manager listening to reps' calls, live or recorded, to check quality, help in the moment or find coaching points.

Live monitoring modes

  • Listen: the manager hears the call silently. Neither the rep nor the prospect hears the manager.
  • Whisper: the manager speaks to the rep only. The prospect does not hear it.
  • Barge: the manager joins the call and everyone can hear them.

Monitoring can also happen afterward, by reviewing call recordings or transcripts.

Why it matters for sales teams

Monitoring shows the gap between what reps think they do on calls and what actually happens. A manager listening to a new rep's first live calls can whisper a better question, or step in before a promising conversation is lost.

It works best when reps know how it is used and when it leads to call coaching rather than only scoring. Before recording calls, check which consent rules apply.

Example

A manager listens to a new SDR's call with a promising prospect. The prospect mentions they are already talking to another vendor, and the rep starts to wrap up. The manager whispers: "Ask what they like about it." The rep asks, the prospect opens up about what is missing, and the call ends with a meeting instead of a polite goodbye.
