What is BANT?
BANT is a lead qualification framework that checks a prospect's Budget, Authority, Need and Timeline before a team invests more sales time.
What BANT stands for
- Budget: can the prospect pay for a solution, or find the money?
- Authority: is this person involved in the decision, or can they bring in the decision-maker?
- Need: is there a real problem your product solves?
- Timeline: when do they plan to decide or act?
Why it matters for sales teams
BANT gives reps a quick, shared checklist for deciding whether a lead is worth pursuing now. It is simple to learn and easy to apply on a first call, which suits SDRs deciding whether to pass a lead on as a sales-qualified lead.
It has limits. Asked bluntly, budget and authority questions can feel like an interrogation, and some buyers have no budget set aside until they see a strong case. Some teams use BANT as a guide rather than a strict gate, and use a deeper framework such as MEDDIC for complex deals.
Example
An SDR learns that a prospect's team struggles with call volume (need), the sales director owns tooling decisions and is on the call (authority), there is money for new tools next quarter (budget), and they want something in place before spring hiring (timeline). The lead is qualified and booked with an AE.
